Following the DMAIC methodology, we structure our training into 5 units. All training modules or articles will have a leading number in front of its title. The first number will indicate which unit or 'phase' the article falls under (Define, Measure etc.) the 2nd number indicates the lesson and the 3rd number indicates the module. For example '1.1.1 What is Six Sigma' is the first module of the first lesson of the Define Phase.
Six Sigma Training Units or 'Phases'
- 1.0 Define
- 2.0 Measure
- 3.0 Analyze
- 4.0 Improve
- 5.0 Control
What Is The Difference Between Green Belt And Black Belt Training?
On the surface, comparing the two course outlines the big difference between Black Belt and Green Belt training is DOE or Design of Experiment. While the presence of DOE in Black Belt training does differentiate the two courses, there is another more vital aspect that separates the two.
Expected Depth of Knowledge and Level of Cognition: Although Green Belt training does cover 85-90% of the Black Belt curriculum, the expected working knowledge of a Green Belt is not as demanding as a that of a Black Belt.
Black Belts are often considered consultants or change agents within an organization while Green Belts are most often professionals who maintain their current career or role and leverage Six Sigma to improve the processes and operations they manage.

Black Belt vs. Green Belt: Blooms Taxonomy
When attempting to quantify or measure the key differences between Six Sigma Black Belts and Green Belts we can look to the level of understanding each practitioner is expected to demonstrate in reference to Blooms taxonomy. As noted previously, the body of knowledge between the two is not significantly different but the degree to which a student demonstrates that knowledge, comprehension and their ability to apply, analyze and evaluate the subject matter is the differentiating factor. Blooms Taxonomy helps to explain...
- Knowledge - Ability to recall from memory
- Comprehension - Ability to organize, compare or restate important points
- Application - Apply to problems, interact using knowledge & information
- Analysis - Examine and break information into pieces & components and make inferences
- Synthesis - Compile information and present it in a new and different but appropriately meaningful way
- Evaluation - Factually present and defend positions on topics and establish a validated position
Black Belts are expected to operate at higher degrees of demonstrated knowledge as represented by the six above definitions of cognition levels. Black Belts are expected to coach, mentor and certify Green Belts as well as lead projects and teams. Therefore they should function at the analysis and synthesis levels of Blooms Taxonomy on a regular basis.
Green Belts on the other hand are not expected to teach or coach, but they do need to understand and apply (typically while remaining in their full time jobs.) As a result, Green Belts are expected to operate in the comprehension and application cognition levels.

This was a very well produced training program. There was a lot of thought placed into its design where it allowed different ways to interact and to gather and learn the information in insightful, easy flow of learning, understanding, interacting, and easy of knowing where you are at every turn of the process which I found very helpful. I knew when what to expect in a way and how long it could take from start to finish of each module and phases. Great Job!
